Getting methods out of the lab and into use. Dave has founded four companies, described below. He also directs the UVic–Genome BC Proteomics Centre, which has supported more than 20 B.C. life-sciences companies. Our one-hour urinary tract infection test is set to be adopted by Island Health.
A biotechnology company developing informatic tools for agnostic interpretation of mass spectrometry data. Traditional interpretation of mass spectrometry data requires knowledge of sample preparation. This is exacerbated when analyzing tandem mass spectra of unknowns. By circumventing such assumptions about expected components, a more thorough analysis may be achieved and novel components of mixtures may be discovered including unexpected impurities. Mirean also offers lipidomics, metabolomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry imaging services to researchers.

Dave founded Goodlett Scientific in 1995 in Seattle, when he was worried about being laid off from Bristol-Myers Squibb. That didn’t happen, but the company did eventually close its Seattle site, which spawned Seattle Genetics and led to Dave meeting Ruedi Aebersold. In 1997 he went to work with Aebersold in Leroy Hood’s Department of Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Washington. Goodlett Scientific has continued as a general consulting business for editorial and grant review work.
